Awards

ESSA regularly awards the best student paper and the best student poster at its annual conferences. The awards are 350 Euros for the best paper and 150 Euros for the best poster. The awards are decided through an independent, anonymous review process that involves members of the ESSA MC and the conference organisers. The candidates for the best student paper award are identified on the basis of the ratings received by independent, anonymous conference reviewers. Members of the ESSA MC and the local organisers attend their presentation at the conference and consult for the final decision. The best poster award is decided upon a review process at the conference by independent, anonymous evaluations by MC members who rate the posters according to their relevance, innovativeness and clarity. The winners are celebrated during the closing ceremony of the conference.

ESSA has established in 2014 a Distinguished Dissertation Award. The award is 500 Euros, is assigned biannually and goes to the best PhD dissertation in social simulation by an ESSA PhD student member. A call for applications is announced on the ESSA website and newsletter. The selection is made independently by at least two MC members and the final decision is made by the MC in a meeting. The winners are celebrated during the closing ceremony of the conference.

ESSA has recently established an Outstanding Contribution Award for Social Simulation. The award will be celebrated at SSCs. The award will be given to a scientist who stood out for his/her contribution to the development of social simulation worldwide. The decision will be made by the MC through anonymous votes. The award will be only symbolic and will be celebrated during the closing ceremony of the SSCs.

Distinguished Dissertation Award 2014

SSC2014, Barcelona, 5th September 2014

The first ESSA Distinguished Dissertation Award was given in 2014 to PhD. Dr. Amineh Ghorbani (TUDeft, NL) for a dissertation entitled Structuring Socio-technical Complexity – Modelling Agent Systems Using Institutional AnalysisStructuring Socio-technical Complexity – Modelling Agent Systems Using Institutional Analysis”. The winner was awarded at the closing cerimony of Social Simulation Conference 2014 in Barcelona.

Social Simulation Conference 2014 Best Student Paper (Barcelona, Spain)

Gustavo L. Nardin (CNR, Rome) was awarded as the Best Student Paper Award on 5 September 2014 in Barcelona for “From Anarchy to Monopoly: How Competition and Protection Shaped Mafia’s Behavior” (co-authors Giulia Andrighetto, Rosaria Conte and Mario Paolucci)

Social Simulation Conference 2014 Best Student Poster (Barcelona, Spain)

Tomas Trescak (Western Sydney University) was awarded on 5 September 2014 for the Best Student Poster. The poster was entitled “City of Uruk 3000 B.C.: Using genetic algorithms, dynamic planning and crowd simulation to re-enact everyday life of ancient Sumerians” (co-authors Anton Bogdanovych and Simeon Simoff)

Lorena Cavadid (University of Medellin, Colombia) was awarded at ESSA 2013 for the Best Student Conference Paper for the paper entitled “Saddle points in innovation diffusion curves: an explanation from bounded rationality”

Guus ten Broeke (Wageningen University, NL) was awarded at ESSA 2013 for the Best Student Conference Poster for the poster entitled “Using an Agent-Based Model to study the Effects of Enforced Quota for Sustainable Tuna Fishery”

Ermanno Catullo (University of Turin, Italy) was awarded for the Best Student Conference Paper at ESSA 2011, in Montpellier, France. The paper was entitled “A monopolistic competition trade agent-based model with firms heterogeneity”.

Jens Pfau (University of Melbourne, Australia) was awarded for the Best Student Paper at the Third World Congress on Social Simulation, Kassel, Germany. The paper was entitled “Globalization and Cultural Diversity” (co-authors M. Kirley, and Y. Kashima)

Sascha Holzhauer (University of Kassel, Germany) was awarded for the Best Student Poster at the Third World Congress of Social Simulation 2010. The poster was entitled “A Challenging Replication that Partly Succeeded: A Network Evolution Model”.

Zach Lewkovicz (University of Paris VI, France) was awarded for the Best Student Paper at ESSA 2009. The paper was entitled “An agent-based simulation of the French labour market: studying age discrimination” (co-authors Daniel Domingue and Jean-Daniel Kant)
